Korea has two high-speed train brands — KTX and SRT — and they often run the same routes (like Seoul–Busan). For most tourists the choice comes down to one thing: which station is more convenient.
The key differences
| KTX | SRT | |
|---|---|---|
| Operator | Korail | SR |
| Main Seoul station | Seoul Station (central) | Suseo Station (southeast Seoul) |
| Price | Standard | Often slightly cheaper |
| Korail Pass | ✅ Covered | ❌ Not covered |
Which is more convenient?
- Staying near Seoul Station, Myeongdong, or central Seoul? → KTX is easier — Seoul Station is central and well connected.
- Staying near Gangnam / southeast Seoul? → SRT from Suseo may be closer and a bit cheaper.
The Korail Pass only covers KTX
This is the deciding factor for many visitors: the tourist Korail Pass works on KTX (and other Korail trains) but not on SRT. If you’re using a pass, plan around KTX.
Bottom line
For a typical first-time visitor based in central Seoul, KTX is the simpler default. Consider SRT only if you’re staying near Suseo/Gangnam and not using a Korail Pass.
