Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, and it’s often called a “museum without walls” — temples, royal tombs, and stone observatories sit out in the open across the city. It makes a rewarding day trip from Seoul by KTX.
Getting there by KTX
KTX trains from Seoul stop at Singyeongju Station, roughly 2 hours from Seoul Station. Singyeongju sits outside the city center, so plan a few minutes to connect onward by bus or taxi.
For a same-day return, take an early-morning KTX out and a mid-evening train back. If you’re touring multiple cities, this is exactly the kind of trip a Korail Pass is built for.
What to see
Bulguksa Temple & Seokguram Grotto
Gyeongju’s headline UNESCO sights. Bulguksa is a beautifully terraced temple; Seokguram, up the mountain above it, houses a serene stone Buddha. Allow a good half-day for both.
Daereungwon, the royal tomb mounds
Grassy burial mounds of Silla royalty right in the city. One tomb, Cheonmachong, is open so you can see inside.
Cheomseongdae Observatory
A 7th-century stone astronomical observatory — one of the oldest surviving in Asia, and a short walk from the tombs.
Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond (after dark)
If you can stretch into the evening, the reflections of the illuminated pavilions on Wolji Pond are the city’s most photographed view.
Hwangridan-gil
A trendy street of cafés and shops in restored old houses — a good place to refuel between sights.
Getting around once you arrive
The main sights are spread out. From Singyeongju Station, city buses connect to the center and to Bulguksa, but a taxi or a guided tour saves time if you’re only here for the day.
