Seoul is a fantastic base. With Korea’s fast trains, you can be in a fortress town, a beach city, or a hanok village in a couple of hours and back by evening. Here are the best day trips by rail.
Suwon — a UNESCO fortress (~30 min)
The walls of Hwaseong Fortress circle the old city. Quick to reach by metro or train, easy to combine with a relaxed afternoon.
Gangneung — beaches & coffee (~2 hrs by KTX)
On the east coast: Gyeongpo Beach, the Anmok coffee street, and sea views. A great warm-weather escape.
Jeonju — hanok village & food (~1h40 by KTX)
Korea’s food capital and largest hanok village. Doable in a day, better overnight.
Gyeongju — ancient capital (~2 hrs by KTX)
Temples and royal tombs of the Silla kingdom. A long but rewarding day; even better as an overnight or paired with Busan.
Tip: a Korail Pass can cover several of these
If you’re stringing together a few train day trips, a Korail Pass may be cheaper than separate tickets — and removes the foreign-card booking hassle each time.
