An eSIM is the easiest way to land in Korea with working data — no SIM swap, no airport kiosk. Here’s how to pick one and set it up before you fly.
What is an eSIM?
A digital SIM you install by scanning a QR code. Your phone keeps its home SIM, and you switch on the Korea data plan when you arrive. Most phones from the last few years support it (check that yours is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked).
How much data do you need?
- Light use (maps + messaging): a small daily plan is fine.
- Most travelers (maps, translation, photos, social): an unlimited plan for the length of your stay is the safe, stress-free choice.
Klook vs Airalo
- Klook eSIM — runs on major Korean networks, often true unlimited data, simple activation. A strong default.
- Airalo — a well-known global eSIM brand; “unlimited” plans are typically a generous daily high-speed allowance, then throttled.
Either works. Pick based on the data amount and price for your trip length.
Install before you fly
- Buy the eSIM and you’ll get a QR code by email.
- Install it at home (scan the QR) but don’t activate until you arrive — most plans start counting on first use or first connection in Korea.
- Land, turn on the Korea data line, and you’re online instantly.
